Why Psychology Spent 50 Years Rejecting NLP

Since its emergence in the 1970s, Neuro-Linguistic Programming has been rejected by mainstream academic psychology. The dismissal has been near-total: NLP is labeled pseudoscience, its claims are described as unsupported, and its practitioners are treated as operating outside the boundaries of legitimate psychological practice.

For most NLP practitioners, this rejection is either a source of defensiveness or something to ignore. "The results speak for themselves," we say. "Academics do not understand how NLP actually works in practice."

But a 2024 study published in a psychology journal suggests something more interesting is happening. The rejection itself may be unscientific — a case of institutional bias and problematic empirical analysis masquerading as rigorous gatekeeping.

The 2024 study, "Gatekeeping in Science: Lessons from the Case of Psychology and Neuro-Linguistic Programming," argues that psychology's rejection of NLP may reflect something other than dispassionate scientific evaluation. The researchers suggest that the field's gatekeeping against NLP violates scientific ideals — that the dismissal has been more institutional than empirical.

This is a significant claim. It does not prove that NLP works. It argues that the way NLP was rejected was not itself scientific. The rejection preceded the evidence. The conclusions were drawn before the studies were designed. And the studies that were designed often failed to test what NLP practitioners actually do — testing simplified, decontextualized versions of techniques rather than the full interactive process.

If this analysis is correct, it reframes the entire fifty-year debate. NLP is not "pseudoscience." It is an under-researched field that has been excluded from legitimate research by institutional forces rather than by disconfirming evidence.

The skeptical position is not without basis. Here is what the research literature actually shows:

  • Systematic reviews find insufficient evidence. A 2013 review concluded there is little evidence that NLP improves health outcomes. Multiple reviews since then have reached similar conclusions about specific applications.
  • Methodological problems in existing studies. Many positive NLP studies have been criticized for small samples, lack of control groups, and failure to blind participants or assessors.
  • Inconsistent terminology. "NLP" means different things in different studies. Some researchers test a single technique in isolation; others test multi-session interventions. Comparing results across studies is nearly impossible because they are testing different things.
  • Theoretical concerns. Some NLP concepts (eye accessing cues, primary representational systems) have been directly tested and found wanting by neuroscience standards.

What the Emerging Research Shows

Despite the criticism, research on NLP is increasing — and some recent studies are producing interesting results:

  • NLP in education. A 2024 study in Frontiers in Psychology found significant improvements in academic achievement, emotional intelligence, and critical thinking among EFL learners who received NLP-based training compared to a control group.
  • NLP in maternal health. A 2025 quasi-experimental study found NLP interventions significantly enhanced breast milk production and reduced stress in breastfeeding mothers — an entirely unexpected application domain.
  • NLP for speaking skills. A 2025 intervention study in India found NLP significantly improved academic speaking skills.
  • Increasing volume. The number of NLP-related studies published annually has been rising, with research being conducted at universities globally.
